Feeding effects of super-100 yoghurt on body weight and biological activity of Sprague-Dawley rats

Abstract
Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed experimental diet and also were orally administered with Super-100 yoghurt(Hankook Milk Co.) diluted in half with water for 4 weeks. Effect of Super-100 yoghurt on body weight gain, feed and gross efficiencies, triglyceride(TG) and total and LDL-cholesterol levels, atherogenic index(AI), hydroxyl radical and lipid peroxide(LPO) levels and superoxide dismutase(SOD) as a scavenger enzymes on oxygen radicals were evaluated. Administration of Super-100 yoghurt resulted in a marked inhibition(about 45%) in increase of body weight compared with control group for 4 weeks. Total food intake significantly decrease in 30% from 424.7¡¾43.2 g to 301.0¡¾33.4 g by administration of Super-100 yoghurt(p<0.001). Administration of Super-100 yoghurt resulted in a marked decrease in feed efficiency(30%) and gross efficiency(25%) from 18.20¡¾2.92 and 4.10¡¾0.67 to 12.83¡¾1.13 and 3.11¡¾0.49, respectively compared with control group(p<0.01). Triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels and atherogenic index(AI) in serum of rats significantly decreased in all 15% by administration of Super-100 yoghurt(p<0.05). Formation of hydroxyl radical in serum of rats significantly decreased in 63.1% from 5.39¡¾1.44n mole/§· protein to 1.99¡¾0.05 n mole/§· protein and lipid peroxide(LPO) level in serum of rats also significantly decreased in 46.3% from 47.55¡¾3.60 n mole/§¢ serum to 25.52¡¾3.72n mole/§¢ serum by administration of Super-100 yoghurt(p<0.001). Administration of Super-100 yoghurt resulted in a significant increase(about 15%) in superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity compared with control group for 4 weeks. These results suggest that administration of yoghurt such as Super-100 effectively can not only inhibit obesity and chronic degenerative diseases, but also can intervent the aging process.
